I helped lead a design workshop in which myself and some of my coworkers taught students about design, and our roles at IBM. The students were typically age 11-13, and we had about an hour to do a quick design exercise with them. I wrote a new curriculum for the camp tasking students to design a tool for geologists exploring Mars. We divide students into groups of three or four and have them discuss and sketch ideas. Then, using recycled supplies from a local craft shop, they prototype their ideas, create a quick marketing pitch, and share with the group. It was always really fun to see the creative ideas and unique perspectives the students would offer.
